Upton-upon-Severn is one of the few places in Worcestershire that still feels like a river port, because that is what it was. The town faces the water rather than turning its back on it, the moorings and the marina are busy from spring onwards, and the Pepperpot — the copper-domed tower left standing when the old church came down — is the landmark everyone navigates by.

The streets behind it are tight and old. High Street, Old Street, New Street and the lanes running off them are lined with Georgian and earlier buildings, a great many of them listed and plenty with a shop or a pub below and living space above. Further out, Ryall and the newer edges of town add modern estate housing, and the surrounding villages bring cottages, farmhouses and converted outbuildings.

Upton also lives with the river in a way few towns do. The Environment Agency installs demountable barriers along the waterside when the Severn rises, and people here plan around that rather than being caught out by it.
