Kempsey is a long village rather than a compact one, strung out along the old A38 with the Severn on one side and open farmland on the other. That layout gives it an unusual mix of housing for its size: eighteenth and nineteenth-century cottages and farmhouses fronting the main road, substantial detached houses tucked away down towards the river, and a series of post-war and modern closes filled in behind them.

The river is the defining fact here. Kempsey has flooded badly enough in the past that the Environment Agency built formal defences for the village, and anyone living on the low side of the road understands precisely what a wet January means. With no station and only a bus into the city, Kempsey works as a commuter settlement — people live here and work in Worcester, Malvern or further afield.
