Fernhill Heath sits on the A38 in the gap between Worcester and Droitwich, which is largely why it grew. Most of the village is twentieth-century — ribbon development along the main road, post-war closes behind it, newer estates added at the edges — so the housing is practical family stock rather than period property: three and four-bedroom semis and detached houses with fitted kitchens, en-suites, conservatories and garages.

Step off the main road, though, and it gets much older very quickly. Claines has one of the more unusual churches in England, with the Mug House standing inside the churchyard itself — a bare handful of pubs in England can claim that. Hindlip Hall, a mile east, is the headquarters of West Mercia Police. Martin Hussingtree and North Claines are farming parishes of cottages, converted outbuildings and long gravel drives.

This is home ground for us in the most literal sense: we are based in WR3 too. A Fernhill Heath job means no motorway, no city-centre traffic and no hunting for a parking space, which in practice means we can be more flexible about timing here than almost anywhere else we cover.
